Mouraria is where the Moors were allowed to live after the conquest of Lisbon, in 1147, before being expelled together with the Jews in 1497. Little survives from that period except for traces of the medieval wall but this curiously remains the most multiethnic neighborhood in the city. The majority of the foreign population is from Bangladesh, followed by immigrants from China, India, Pakistan, and Mozambique.
It's nonetheless a very authentically Lisbon neighborhood known as the birthplace of Fado. It was here that the first great Fado singer lived in the 1800s, the legendary Severa who fell in love with a count and took the music of the people to the aristocracy. Mouraria life has always been marked by the sound of the guitars, the sound of taverns, brothels music, glasses of wine between friends and Fado. And it’s still there. But this identity joined many others identities and today, rising from the Mall of Mouraria, there is Cape Verdean music, Indian flavors, Brazilian rhythms, Pakistani flavors, Mozambican dishes and Asian mills.
It had become a very rundown neighborhood until major renovations starting in 2009 put it back on the map. It now attracts for its mini "Chinatown", for the kiosks on Martim Moniz Square serving foods from all over the world, and for the cleaned-up Intendente Square which hides one of the most beautiful tiled façades in the city.
Another hidden treasure is the interior of the forms “Colégio dos Meninos orfãos” orphanage on “Rua da Mouraria”, now divided into several public services but with a staircase covered with tile panels from the 1700s depicting passages from the old and new testaments.
Also worth a look is the curious medieval house (one of the oldest in Lisbon) on Largo da Achada behind the Church of St. Christopher, with gothic doors and windows.
It´s a restored ground-floor apartment, with independent entrance through a private courtyard where you can enjoy a meal outdoors.
The apartment has 40m2 area and is full furnished and equipped with fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, oven, vitroceramic hob, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, kettle, stick blender, iron and ironing board, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, free WI-FI everything needed for 3 guests.
The accessibilities are a strong point of our location since we are only 15min away from the airport (by car) and a couple of minutes walking to the bus stop, 28 tram stop, Martim Moniz metro station, Rossio Train station and taxi plaza.
The whole surrounding area offers dozens of restaurants, traditional shops, super markets, Fado houses, cafes, shops and pharmacies.
Once we are in the heart of the city you can walk through the narrow streets and discover the main sights which are near to the apartment as São Jorge Castel, Rossio Square, Terreiro do Paço, Baixa-Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama (…), and experience the Lisbon’s inhabitants unique way of life.

Sin duda una gran elección. La casa está muy bien y goza de una buena ubicación. Los anfitriones muy atentos y agradables.
A really nice house, place and nice hosts, definitely. We really enjoyed it.
It was a really nice and funny stay at Rita's flat. She gave us a warm welcome and was very helpful. The flat itself was pretty cool and very central, great for us. For myself the best: the window bench for sitting and looking outside. We will come again. Thanks Rita!!!
Me and my daughter had a great time at this appartment. It is really cosy and just like you see it on the pictures. We felt like it was a bit our home between the people who live there. The location is also great. Just near to Alfama, Martin Moniz and Rossio square. A lot of things are at walking distance. But it is also near to the metrostation, a taxistop and tram 28. Gustavo had a possibility to pick us up at the airport so e did. Thanks again for that. He showed us the appartment and we also had some nice tips for visiting Lisbon. We loved our stay here and would really recomend it.
Very nice flat, like on the pictures. Rita is very nice. Great host, great flat, great vacation! Thanks
this flat is very beautiful, comfortable, calm but also well located!
the owners are very friendly and gave us a worm welcome!
we really felt us like home!!!

Though, when arriving, the first impression of the location in the Rua das Barracas was poor because of desolate facades in the street and buildings under construction, we were positively surprised by Rita and Andre's warm welcome and their smart apartment. Obviously, in near future the whole street will be in a good shape.
This apartment is clean, cosy and arranged tastfully with attention to detail. A metro station is in walking distance which takes one easily to the central places in 10 till 15 minutes. There is also a supermarket in the neighborhood.
It is perfect for a typical stay of several days and we would definitely recommend it. However, for longer stays it's small size might cause the feeling of constriction.
All together we enjoyed our stay in Lisboa very much! Best regards from Martina & Bernhard from Linz/Austria.
The apartment is nice and clean and has everything we needed. It is well located, not far from the main attractions of Lisbon. Rita and Andre gave us a worm welcome and were very helpful.
